An annual free swims scheme that operated in Hartlepool during the school summer holidays has been hailed another big success.

Figures show that a total of 8,634 free swims were taken over the course of the Hartlepool Borough Council scheme for under-16s which ran from July 23-August 31 at Mill House Leisure Centre.

Some of the swimmers used the free transport provided as part of the scheme, while others made their own way to the leisure centre.

The scheme has now been running for six years and is part of the Council’s on-going commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles.

Children take advantage of the free swims scheme

Councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher, the Leader of the Council, said: “I am delighted that the free swims scheme has once again been a big success.

“We have had some very positive feedback from people who took advantage of the scheme this year, and I would like thank local families for supporting the initiative in such large numbers

“I would also like to thank all of the Hartlepool Borough Council staff involved in organising and running the scheme for their continued hard work and commitment.”
