Volunteers sought for heritage project

An appeal has been issued for volunteers to get involved in a project to record the buildings of one of Hartlepool's most historic areas.

The project - part of the Heritage Lottery-funded Church Street Revival Townscape Heritage Scheme –will run from October 22-26 and centre on the Church Street Conservation Area.

Fiona Riley, Hartlepool Borough Council’s Townscape Heritage Project Officer, said: “It’s a chance for people to help us find out more about the history and development of the buildings within the conservation area.

“The project will enable them to look at the buildings in a completely different way, understand how they were built, explore the materials used and the features that make each building different and record those details that they may have walked past for years and never noticed.

“The information recorded will provide invaluable insight into the current condition of the buildings and create a baseline reference and research tool that will be extremely useful to anybody investigating the heritage of the area in the future.”

Volunteers working on the project, which involves recording the detail of buildings from the public highway only, will be overseen by staff from Tees Archaeology.

Robin Daniels from Tees Archaeology said: “We would welcome as many volunteers as possible and they will work in teams of two or more. All training and equipment will be provided and no previous knowledge or experience is required.”

The project will operate from 9.30am-3.30pm daily, and volunteers can choose the number of days they wish to work.
