He said: “I’m delighted to take on both of these additional responsibilities and am absolutely committed to working with people across the political spectrum to achieve the very best for the people of Hartlepool and the Tees Valley.

“The position of Deputy Mayor puts Hartlepool even more in the local, regional and national spotlight as we continue to press ahead with the regeneration of the town and I am looking forward very much to working closely with Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen and my fellow cabinet members to see the Tees Valley as a whole realise its full potential.

“Hartlepool has a rich heritage and vibrant culture from Saxon times to the present day, and as Cabinet Member for Culture and Tourism I will be ensuring that we attract investment to enable us to make the most of our tourist attractions including the Waterfront, Seaton Carew and the Headland to grow our cultural and visitor economy.

“Among my other main Hartlepool priorities will be the creation of a new leisure centre to replace the one at Mill House and the transformation of play facilities for youngsters across the town.

“Hartlepool and the wider Tees Valley have a reputation as a great place to live, work and visit and I look forward to playing my part in growing that reputation even more.”
