Big Lime Weekend road closure reminder

Published Tuesday, 6th August 2019

Residents are reminded that road closures will be in place on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 August for the Big Lime Weekend events.

For the Aquathlon event, the section of Maritime Avenue in the Marina will be closed between the National Museum of the Royal Navy mini roundabout and Victoria Terrace between 7am and 10.30am.

The following day, the same section of road will be closed from 7am until 10.45am.

The section of Maritime Avenue along from Victoria Terrace to Chandler’s Close and the section of Coronation Drive between Newburn Bridge and Station Lane will be closed between 8am and 9.45am. Signed diversions will be in place.

A limited number of spaces are left for the event, which comprises a 750-metre swim in Hartlepool marina, a 20-kilometre bike ride along the sea front at Seaton Carew and a 5-kilometre run from Maritime Avenue to Seaton Carew and back.

Both the bike ride and run will use parts of the promenade and pedestrians are being asked to follow the advice of volunteer marshals stationed along the route. Dog owners are also asked to keep their pets on leads.

Ryan Houghton, Hartlepool Borough Council’s Senior Sport and Physical Activity Coordinator, said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the road closures and thank people in advance for their patience and co-operation.

“Townspeople were very supportive of last year’s event, and we would urge them to come out over the course of the weekend to cheer competitors on and help us make it another big success.

“We’d also like to thank those people who have already offered to help marshal the events, but we would be grateful to anyone else who is able to give up a few hours of their time.”

Volunteer marshals are still needed to ensure the smooth-running of all events over the course of the weekend. The marshals will be placed at strategic points around each course to assist both competitors and spectators.

People of all ages are welcome, but under-16s must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone who is interested can contact Christopher Fairless on Christopher.fairless@hartlepool.gov.uk or via 01429 523556.

Entries will continue to be accepted right up until the day of the event. To enter go to www.gethartlepoolactive.co.uk/triathlon
