Sign up to the Commuter Challenge

Commuters in Hartlepool are being urged to take the first step towards a healthier, happier lifestyle by signing up to the second Let's Go Tees Valley Commuter Challenge.

The week-long challenge, which runs until Friday (September 22nd), involves them swapping some or all of their single-occupancy car journeys for walking, cycling, using the bus or the train or car sharing with colleagues, family or friends.

Speaking on behalf of Let’s Go Tees Valley, Alex Kay said: “Nearly half of all car journeys are under two miles and these short trips have a huge impact on congestion and pollution in and around our towns. We know that people often don’t consider the car-free alternatives, and this is a great opportunity for them to try out new ways to travel.”

The Commuter Challenge is being supported by the Hartlepool Active Travel Hub, a Hartlepool Borough Council-led initiative that works to promote more sustainable forms of travel.

Councillor John Tennant, Chair of the Council’s Neighbourhood Services Committee, said: “We hope that commuters will rise to the challenge and take part.  We want to reduce single occupancy car journeys as fewer cars mean less congestion and less pollution.  If you choose to walk or cycle you’ll also reap considerable health benefits.

“To help you on your way the Hartlepool Active Travel Hub is here to help locally. It can advise on car share and public transport, cycle training and alternative options if you need transport during your work day. And of course by taking part in the challenge you could win fantastic prizes.”

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen praised the Commuter Challenge and urged more commuters to take part.

He said: “We’re investing heavily to make cycling, walking, train and bus journeys as smooth, enjoyable and as fast as possible. Just last month I signed off advanced funding to kick-start a number of transport projects worth £45million, including cash to improve cycling and walking infrastructure.

“The Let’s Go Tees Valley Commuter Challenge is a great opportunity for people living and working in the region to explore using healthier and more sustainable forms of transport for their daily commute and enjoy the health benefits of being more active.”

Let’s Go Tees Valley are giving away daily prizes for people who post their #HappyCommute photos on Facebook or Twitter during the challenge. They’ve got a stand-up paddle boarding lesson, team breakfast at work for ten people, a Fitbit, a luxury afternoon tea, and four weekly bus tickets all up for grabs! Simply find and follow them on social media and look out for the posts on how to enter. This is in addition to the main prize draw to win a £750 Boardman Bike Bundle, which is open to everyone who submits their journey information at the end of the week.
