Don't make it easy for burglars, householders urged

Residents of Hartlepool are being urged to make life as difficult as possible for would-be burglars by following some basic home security advice.

The Hartlepool Community Safety Team says they should get into the habit of always locking doors and windows – even when at home.

The advice has been issued to coincide with National Home Security Month which is running throughout October.

Jane Munden, Victim Services Officer with the Hartlepool Community Safety Team, said: “Always ensure that keys are kept out of sight in a safe place and never left in or by a door. Also, they should never be left under doormats or in flowerpots as thieves are fully aware of these so-called “hiding places”.”

She says that home owners should also consider installing a door viewer so that they can identify callers before opening their doors.

In relation to home improvement works, she added:  “If you’re looking to buy a new door then it’s best to buy the whole “door set” which includes both the frame and the door. New doors and windows should also be certified to PAS 24 2016.”

Jane will be out and about throughout the month offering advice and information on home security, and she is also available to carry out free home visits to offer advice on security measures that residents might wish to take. Visits can be arranged by calling (01429) 523100 or emailing community.safety@hartlepool.gov.uk
