Following the postponement of Hartlepool’s Big Lime Triathlon as a result of the Coronavirus crisis, would-be competitors are being invited to take part in an alternative “virtual” challenge.

Hartlepool Borough Council’s Participation Team has set up the Virtual Duathlon Challenge which involves cycling 20km and running 5km.

It requires competitors to record their times for each discipline between August 12th and 16th using the Strava or Garmin apps. Competitors must email proof of their results (eg a screen shot of the app) with their full name and contact details to participation@hartlepool.gov.uk by 8pm on Sunday August 16th.

The following prizes will be awarded to the individuals with the fastest combined cycling and running time:

1st Prize: A MYZONE® MZ-3 Physical Activity Belt worth £129.99.

2nd Prize: A £20 Amazon gift voucher with Big Lime T-shirt and swim cap.

The Big Lime Triathlon, a sprint triathlon, is traditionally the culmination of Hartlepool’s annual Big Lime Weekend,

This year, it was due to take place from Friday August 14th-Sunday August 16th but Hartlepool Borough Council decided to postpone it until 2021 to protect the health and wellbeing of competitors, staff and spectators.

Senior Sport and Physical Activity Coordinator Ryan Houghton said: “This is the first time we have had to postpone since launching in 2013, and it was scheduled to be a big year for the triathlon with it having recently received North East Championship Status.

“Whilst we are bitterly disappointed, we want to offer would-be competitors the chance to stay involved with us and we hope they take the opportunity to compete in the Virtual Duathlon Challenge.”
