Countdown to Christmas lights switch-on in Hartlepool

Published Monday, 30th November 2020

Hartlepool’s festive lights will be switched on this week as the countdown to Christmas begins in earnest.

Although the usual Church Square switch-on has been cancelled as a result of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, there’s still lots of virtual fun in store for the whole family.

From 5pm, we’ll be celebrating on-air at 102.4FM with our friends at Radio Hartlepool.

Join Jason and Hartlepool Borough Council’s Events Team as they go through some of their favourite songs as they throw a Christmas Party.

There may even be a very special guest joining their knees-up via Zoom to pick some of his own Christmas favourites to be played on the air-waves!

If you have a favourite Christmas song yourself, make sure you get in touch with Radio Hartlepool on Wednesday between 5pm and 6pm to get your request in.

Hartlepool Borough Council will also have a number of cameras positioned across the town on Wednesday night and will share a compilation video of the Christmas lights at around 8:30pm.

This will be available to watch online at:

Councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher, Chair of the Regeneration Services Committee, said: “Whilst we can’t have our usual Christmas lights switch-on, we can still all get together virtually to help spread some festive cheer.

“2020 has been an incredibly challenging year, but coming together, even virtually, can help our families, friends and all that we love to enter the festive spirit.”

People are encouraged to share their own pictures of Hartlepool’s Christmas lights through social media with the hashtag #HpoolXmasLights
