Give us your views on cycling in Hartlepool

Council officials in Hartlepool hope to secure around £250,000 from British Cycling to develop new cycling opportunities and facilities that encourage more people to cycle more often, more safely.

To support their bid to the Place to Ride programme, they are asking local people to tell them how much they cycle and what cycling activities they have taken part in over the last 12 months, and, more importantly, to share their views on whether the proposed developments will encourage and enable them to cycle more.

They can do this via an online survey at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/HBC20Cyclingbid The survey closes at 12 noon on December 22nd and by taking part you could win one of four £50 shopping vouchers.

Head of Leisure, Recreation and Participation Ian Gardiner said added, “Being physically active is vitally important to leading a healthy life and this is especially the case currently, given the on-going Covid-19 pandemic. Cycling is one of the best and most fun forms of physical activity. We are aware that people have cycled more over lockdown and we hope to build on this in the future if we are successful with this funding bid.”

If the funding bid is successful, it is proposed to provide the following:

Seaton Park

  • A new “Mini Hartlepool” learn-to-ride area for children, including mini tarmac roads, junctions and pedestrian crossings.
  • Balance bike, learn-to-ride and confidence-building courses for young people and adults.
  • Regular, led, group cycling activities.
  • Recreational cycling events.

 Summerhill Country Park

  • A floodlit 750m cycle track for people learning to ride and for those training at a higher level.
  • Improvements to the existing BMX track, including floodlights and a warm-up area.
  • Balance bike and learn to ride courses for young people and adults.
  • An expanded cycle repair service.
