REMINDER: Nominations sought for Civic Honours

Published Thursday, 4th March 2021

Hartlepool Borough Council is seeking nominations for either individuals or organisations to be granted a historic title.

The Honorary Freeman/Freewoman and Honorary Alderman/Alderwoman titles are the highest honours that a Council can bestow.

Alan Chapman – who was CEO of Hartlepool Aspire Trust, which runs Catcote Academy, Catcote Futures and Catcote Sixth Form – was the last person to be awarded the Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Hartlepool title when he received the recognition posthumously in 2020.

In 2017, Jill Kitching - Founder of Epilepsy Outlook, Mohamed Menabawey – who set up the fertility unit at the town’s hospital, Alby Pattison – creator of Hartlepool-based Hart Biologicals and the 1st Hartlepool Boys’ Brigade Company were recipients of titles.

Others who have received the prestigious accolade include former Hartlepool MP Lord Mandelson, TV celebrity Jeff Stelling and Hartlepool Lifeboat Station.

Councillor Brenda Loynes, Chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Civic Honours Committee, said: “I think it right and proper that the Council should acknowledge those who render eminent service to our town.

“There are many individuals and organisations who serve our town with pride and distinction and I am sure we will not be short of nominations.”
