Could you be a councillor?

Published Tuesday, 9th March 2021

Following a review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England and the postponement of all elections in 2020, on Thursday 6th May 2021 elections to Hartlepool Borough Council will take place in 12 newly-created wards in Hartlepool.

Three councillors will be elected to each of the twelve wards, taking the total number of councillors to 36.

Anyone interested in finding out more about standing as a councillor is invited to a pre-election briefing at Hartlepool Civic Centre in Victoria Road on Saturday 13th March at 10am.

Due to social distancing requirements there is a limit to the number of people who are able to attend – please contact the Electoral Team on 01429 523088 to book – places will be allocated on a first come basis.

The briefing will provide potential candidates with an opportunity to hear first-hand what it’s like to be a councillor and to find out more about the electoral process, from nomination to the election count.

Hartlepool Borough Council requires different kinds of people from all backgrounds willing to stand for election as councillors – people who are capable, vibrant, energetic and engaged, with a commitment to local residents and a passion for making change happen.

The role of a councillor is vital in the local community because:

  • they are a voice of the people, who know what is best for their local communities
  • they are champions of those who use local services
  • they are critical to the effective functioning of democracy, and
  • they play a very important role in helping shape future services for the benefit of local people.

If you are not able to attend the briefing but would like more information, please contact the Electoral Team by emailing elections@hartlepool.gov.uk or by calling 01429 523088 during normal office hours for an informal chat.
