A series of events and activities will take place in Hartlepool next week to mark Dementia Action Week 2021.

A range of organisations, including Hartlepool Borough Council, The Hospital of God at Greatham, Hartlepool Carers and Groundwork, have come together under the umbrella of Dementia Friendly Hartlepool which aims to develop the town as a nationally-recognised dementia-friendly community.

Events and activities will take place throughout the week, which runs from May 17th-23rd, and local people are being urged to get involved.

Hannah Robertson, Co-ordinator of Dementia Friendly Hartlepool, said: “There’s some great work going on in Hartlepool to raise awareness of dementia and to make the town a better place for people living with the disease and their families.

“I’m delighted that so many organisations have come together to provide such a busy programme of events during Dementia Action Week, and I would encourage as many people as possible to get involved”.

Events/activities include:

  • A Trail Walk at Ward Jackson Park. This can be done at any time during the week. All you need to do to get started is scan the QR code at the Place in the Park café. Paper sheets will be available too.
  • The Bridge dementia support service in Villiers Street will be open throughout the week for appointments and Dementia Friend sessions. It will be hosting a virtual general knowledge quiz from 2.30-3.30pm on Friday May 21st.
  • Care homes will be receiving activity packs for their residents which are being put together by Hartlepool Borough Council’s Sport and Physical Activity Participation Team.
  • Dementia Friendly Hartlepool is inviting people to pick up their knitting needles and take part in a forget-me-not knitting challenge. Patterns can be collected at The Bridge and the most forget-me-nots knitted in a week will win a £20 voucher.
  • Hartlepool Borough Council’s Community Hub Outreach and Engagement Team will be hosting a series of events during the week, including a digital 50s and 60s general knowledge quiz followed by light exercise from 11.30am-12.30pm on Wednesday May 19th and a virtual sing-along from 10.30-11.30am on Friday May 21st. Places at these events need to be booked in advance.
