Wynyard consultation launched

Published Monday, 14th February 2022

A consultation has been launched that explores the vision for future development at Wynyard that aims to further boost growth and secure enhanced investment in services, facilities and open spaces.

Since designation of Wynyard as a Garden Village in January 2020, Homes England and Wynyard Park have been working closely with Hartlepool Borough Council on what this means for Wynyard’s future.

The visioning document published for consultation explores how ongoing development at Wynyard can achieve the key qualities that underpin the Government’s Garden Village Programme.

The draft Wynyard Garden Village Visioning Document is available on Hartlepool Borough Council’s website for views and comments until Monday 7 March and be accessed at www.hartlepool.gov.uk/wynyardgardenvillage

The Government’s designation of Wynyard as a Garden Village presents an important opportunity to deliver a sustainable new settlement at Wynyard.

As a Garden Village, Wynyard is a key location for additional investment in the local and strategic road network, schools, open spaces and community facilities to support the area’s continued growth as a sustainable, self-sufficient community.

The announcement in January 2020 also confirmed that up to 6,800 homes may ultimately be built at Wynyard, making the development the largest new settlement in the North East.

Councillor Cameron Stokell, Chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Neighbourhood services Committee, said: “This consultation follows substantial engagement over recent years as part of preparation of the Local Plans for both Hartlepool Borough Council and Stockton Borough Council and the preparation of the Wynyard Masterplan itself.

“This latest vision considers how development at Wynyard can support additional growth and I would encourage people to have their say and take part in the online consultation.”

David Stephenson, Senior Planning and Enabling Manager at Homes England, said: “Following Wynyard securing Garden Village Status in January 2020, Homes England has been working closely with Hartlepool Borough Council and Wynyard Park Limited to ensure key garden village principles are integrated into future development opportunities at Wynyard Village. This vision will help us develop a framework for future growth, addressing infrastructure requirements, schools, placemaking, open spaces and sustainability. The consultation with the local community is an important next step and we encourage everyone to have their say on Wynyard’s future.”

Matt Johnson, Development Director at Wynyard Park, added: ‘We’ve been working closely alongside Homes England, National Highways and the Local Authority to advance a refreshed vision for Wynyard, which will secure the long term delivery of strategic infrastructure and community facilities in a unique, Garden village setting.

“The plan will see further significant enhancements to the highway network along with the development of a new Local Centre, a truly outstanding local pub and restaurant, along with many other facilities essential to support a sustainable community. The scheme will continue to be delivered under a landscape led design code to ensure a high quality environment throughout.”

As many of the key developments associated with the Garden Village designation are solely within Hartlepool’s administrative area, Stockton Borough Council is not directly involved in these latest proposals.
