The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Hartlepool

Published Monday, 16th May 2022

Plans have been announced for a number of events in Hartlepool to mark next month’s Platinum Jubilee Central Weekend.

Earlier this year Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth.

To celebrate this unprecedented anniversary, events and initiatives will take place in Hartlepool across a special four day UK bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June.

The four days of celebrations will include public events and community activities, as well as national moments of reflection on The Queen’s 70 years of service.

At 9pm on Thursday 2 June, residents are invited to join two very special beacon lighting ceremonies at either Seaton Carew or the Headland.

On the evening of Saturday 4 June, Hartlepool Borough Council will be live streaming the Platinum Party at the Palace at Elephant Rock – the restored outdoor events space on the Headland. The exact details of the Platinum Party at the Palace are still to be confirmed, but the BBC is promising an evening featuring an incredible range of highlights from global music stars with a full, live orchestra - to actors from film, TV and the stage telling the story and celebrating some of the most significant cultural moments from The Queen’s seven decade reign.

Then on Sunday 5 June, the team behind Hartlepool Waterfront Festival have invited artists from across Europe to take over the historic Headland – with the Headland Squircle and Elephant Rock being the two main pitches.

The Redheugh Gardens will also play host to a sound garden by local musician Madeleine Smyth, who has taken local memories of the Queen and her reign and sounds from across our country and woven them into an audible tapestry that will be played throughout the day on Sunday 5 June.

Councillor Shane Moore, the Leader of Hartlepool Borough Council, said: “The Queen has been a wonderful servant of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth and it is great that we are able to celebrate her reign in this way.

“I really hope people across Hartlepool will welcome the opportunity to join together to celebrate the amazing commitment and dedication of Her Majesty The Queen – our longest reigning monarch and the first to mark a Platinum Jubilee.”

Denise McGuckin, the Managing Director of Hartlepool Borough Council, added: “Next month’s four day bank holiday weekend will provide us with a unique opportunity to celebrate our wonderful Queen and it’s a great time to be hosting our first events at Elephant Rock, our award winning events space on the Headland.

“In addition to these large scale events, we also have a full programme of events and activities taking place at our Community Hubs and branch libraries, as well as Hartlepool Art Gallery and the Museum of Hartlepool.”

Across the bank holiday weekend, Residents are encouraged to share photos on social media using the hashtags #PlatinumJubileeHartlepool and #HM70Hartlepool.
