Hartlepool Art Club celebrates a major milestone when its 75th annual exhibition opens at Hartlepool Art Gallery this weekend.

The popular annual exhibition, which runs from Saturday 19th November to Saturday 14th January, showcases the creativity and talent which has established the club’s reputation as one of the leading art societies in the north of England.

On display will be a range of original artwork by club members, featuring a variety of techniques and subject matter, which is available to buy.

The group’s history dates back over a century to 1907. It evolved into the Hartlepool Art Club and, in 1947, opened its first annual exhibition at the Gray Art Gallery and Museum.

The 1950s saw Frank Henry Mason become President. Other prestigious artist such as Walter Parker and Stephen Crowther were members.

The club has continued to flourish and currently has 70 members, ranging from enthusiastic beginners to experienced painters.

Its ethos has remained the same – to support and encourage local artists, from the beginner to the more experienced member.

Angela Thomas, Hartlepool Art Gallery Curator, said: “Seventy-five years since the first exhibition, the Council has continued to support the club, providing a meeting space in the gallery and hosting the marvellous annual display of members’ work.

“Over the years, many paintings have been acquired by Hartlepool Museums Service, which means the skills of local artists are preserved for future generations.

“We’re delighted to once again host the club’s annual exhibition in the gallery and showcase some of their fantastic work.

“It’s a selling exhibition, so together with the gallery’s Christmas shop it’s a great opportunity to snap up some really unique and unusual handcrafted items, either as gifts or to treat yourself, at prices to suit all pockets.”

Sue Osbon, Exhibition Secretary of Hartlepool Art Club, said: “We are all pleased that our club continues to be a focus for art in the community and we are delighted to be able to work with the Council in mounting our 75th Annual Exhibition.”

Hartlepool Art Club meets in the art gallery every second Wednesday of the month from 7pm to 9pm and new members and visitors are always welcome. For more details visit www.hartlepool-art-club.co.uk
