Hartlepool has been backed to be a “fantastic host” of The Tall Ships Races 2023 by a feature sponsor of the event with big intentions to play an key part in the local community for the long term.

X-energy – which has its sights set on helping Teesside become a centre of industrial excellence in the Net Zero age – has got behind the international event that will transform the town’s waterfront from July 6-9, 2023.

The leading developer of advanced small modular nuclear reactors’ branding will be a regular presence in the build-up and during Tall Ships Hartlepool. It will sponsor one of the performance stages and fund one of the lucky Sail Trainees too.

The four-day spectacular will be one of the largest free UK events this year when a fleet of more than 35 ships and thousands of people will head to the North Sea coastal town for the second time.

The X-Energy team (L-R) Steve Coates, David Rossi, Carol Tansley and Leon Flexman are welcomed to Hartlepool by Hartlepool Borough Council’s Gemma Ptak and Beverley Bearne (centre).

Carol Tansley, X-energy's Vice President of UK Nuclear New Build, said: "We're thrilled to be a part of such an exciting and iconic event.

“It's obvious that Hartlepool will be a fantastic host once again given the enormous local involvement, from volunteer organisers to the creative acts and traders taking part, and of course the brilliant Sail Trainees.

"We're planning to be a part of this community for decades to come, creating high quality, high paying jobs and work for local firms by producing clean energy from our Xe100 modern nuclear power plants. We're very proud to be supporting this great celebration.”

X-energy and its partner Cavendish Nuclear are developing proposals for advanced small modular nuclear reactors in Hartlepool. They hope to provide clean energy and high-quality employment to the area.

The proposed new reactors could be located on land adjacent to the existing power station at Seaton Carew, with up to 80 per cent of the plant construction and manufacturing coming from the UK supply chain.

X-energy is looking to have a positive impact on the Hartlepool community for the long term and becoming a feature sponsor of the Tall Ships is seen as an exciting way to start.

Catherine Honey, Hartlepool Borough Council’s Tall Ships Event Director, said: “We are so pleased to have X-energy on board for this incredible summer showpiece.

“X-energy want to have a lasting impact on this area and I’m sure the team will be excited about being involved during a fantastic occasion that will attract thousands of visitors to Hartlepool.

“As a host port, Hartlepool will be celebrating for four days with music stages, world food markets, fireworks and pyrotechnics, while visitors will have the chance to see and get on board the beautiful ships.

“Hartlepool has seen tall ships sign up from all over the world and those who visited when the Tall Ships came to Hartlepool for the first time in 2010 will know all about how special those are to see.”
