Big Lime Triathlon – road closures

Published Wednesday, 16th August 2023

A series of road and promenade closures will be in place on Sunday (20th August) for Hartlepool’s Big Lime Triathlon.

The annual event organised by Hartlepool Borough Council which comprises a 750m open water swim, a 20km cycle ride and a 5km run, will take place between Hartlepool marina and Seaton Carew.

Maritime Avenue in the marina will be closed to traffic from 7am-10.45am from the roundabout outside the National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool to Victoria Terrace to ensure athletes can safely transition between the three triathlon disciplines.

There will be no access to Maritime Avenue properties beyond Victoria Terrace from 7.45am-9.50am to ensure the road is closed and safe for the cycle element. Letters explaining this have been delivered to affected properties.

Coronation Drive, from Newburn Bridge to Station Lane at Seaton Carew, will be closed from 7.45am-9.50am for the cycle element of the race. This will affect the following streets which connect with Coronation Drive – Lawson Road, Warrior Drive, The Green and Queen Street. Residents of these streets wanting to travel during the closure period are advised to head west along Warrior Drive or join Station Lane.

A section of promenade from Hartlepool marina to a point adjacent to Warrior Drive at Seaton Carew will also be shut from 7.30am-10.45am.

Paula Carroll, Hartlepool Borough Council’s Participation Team Manager, said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the closures and thank people in advance for their patience and co-operation.

“Townspeople are always very supportive of the event, and every year athletes tell us they really appreciate the support they receive from the many spectators along the route. We hope they will once again turn out in their numbers to help make the event another big success.”

The Council is still looking for volunteer marshals to help ensure the smooth running of the event. They will be staged at strategic points along the route to help direct competitors and spectators. People of all ages are welcome, but under-16s must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone who is interested can email participation@hartlepool.gov.uk
