Pupils promote road safety message

Road safety is a whole school affair at Brougham Primary – thanks to the efforts of two pupils.

Sienna and Bobbie who are both in Year 6 and members of the School Council, have each taken on the role of Junior Road Safety Officer for their final year at the school.

And they have taken to the role with enthusiasm and confidence – even down to addressing all of the other pupils at a whole school assembly.

“They were really brave and fantastic in the way they spoke to the other pupils,” said Hayley Barclay, a Higher Level Teaching Assistant and School Council lead.

Activities overseen by the duo include a “Be Safe, Be Seen” campaign, a competition to design a cycle helmet, promoting the rules of the Green Cross Code and encouraging pupils to use School Crossing Patroller Sean Hannon who is based on Brougham Terrace.

And their work seems to be paying off, with anecdotal evidence suggesting that more and more people are crossing the road with Sean’s assistance.

Sienna and Bobbie receive support from Emma Martin in Hartlepool Borough Council’s Road Safety Team who praised their efforts.

“They have both been fantastic in the role, a real credit to themselves and Brougham Primary School,” she said.
