Magistrates grant Closure Order on Hartlepool house

Published Thursday, 18th July 2024

A Closure Order has been granted on a Hartlepool house due to the tenant’s anti-social and criminal behaviour.

The multi-agency Hartlepool Community Safety Team applied to Teesside Magistrates for the order on 46 Suggitt Street.

This followed complaints about the tenant banging on internal doors within the property and repeatedly playing extremely loud music for prolonged periods of time throughout the day and into the early hours of the morning whilst singing karaoke.

She also engaged in shouting, swearing, verbal abuse and harassment, and made threats of violence towards other residents using a metal pole

The order which will remain in force for three months, prevents the tenant from accessing the property.

Speaking as Chair of the Safer Hartlepool Partnership, Councillor Jonathan Brash who was recently elected as MP for Hartlepool, said: “Anti-social and criminal behaviour such as this can seriously affect the quality of life of neighbouring residents and no-one should have to put up with it.

“Wherever possible, the Hartlepool Community Safety Team will take action to protect the law-abiding majority of residents as demonstrated by the eight Closure Orders secured since July last year.

“This latest order reinforces the message that we are not prepared to tolerate behaviour that makes other people’s lives a misery.”

Inspector Adrian Dack from Hartlepool’s Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) said: “This kind of behaviour makes the lives of residents an absolutely misery and it will not be tolerated.

“Cleveland Police will continue to work with our partner agencies and our local communities to help obtain closure orders and improve the lives of residents. We welcome information and evidence from members of the community to tell us what is happening so we can take action. Please call 101 with any information.”

The maximum penalty for breaching a Closure Order is six months imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine. Anyone who witnesses an order being breached should call Cleveland Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency. Alternatively, they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
