Last call for the Big Lime Triathlon

Published Friday, 2nd August 2024

The final call has gone out for people to get involved in Hartlepool’s Big Lime Triathlon – either as a competitor or a volunteer marshal.

Hartlepool Borough Council’s Active Hartlepool service has joined forces with specialist company Wild Deer Events to stage the event on Sunday 11th August.

This year - for the first time – a standard distance triathlon will take place alongside the usual sprint triathlon.

The standard triathlon comprises a 1,500m swim, a 40km cycle ride (on partially closed roads) and a 10km run. The sprint triathlon involves a 750m swim, a 20km cycle ride and a 5km run. Both events will take place between Hartlepool Marina and Seaton Carew, along Tees Road.

There are also separate options for people to take part in open water swims only, of varying distances.

All competitors will receive an event medal and merchandise, along with a snack and drink on the day.

If you haven’t yet signed up, you’ll need to act quickly - entries close at midnight on Tuesday 6th August. For more information and to enter visit www.wilddeerevents.co.uk/events/101/.

The organisers would also still welcome more volunteers to act as marshals to help ensure the smooth running of the event.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome, but under-16s must be accompanied by an adult. The marshals will be placed at strategic points on the course to assist both competitors and spectators.

Each volunteer will be entitled to a free entry to a Wild Deer event this year, which can be gifted to a friend or family member, or next year, as well as a piece of Wild Deer merchandise plus a snack and drink on the day.

Anyone interested in becoming a marshal should email info@wilddeerevents.co.uk for full details.

Residents are also reminded that on the day of the event a series of road and promenade closures will be in place.

The section of Maritime Avenue from the roundabout outside the National Museum of the Royal Navy to Victoria Terrace will be closed to traffic from 6am-1pm to ensure that competitors can safely transition between the three triathlon disciplines.

There will be no vehicle access to Maritime Avenue properties beyond Victoria Terrace between 7am and 10.30am to ensure that the road is closed and safe for the cycling element. Letters are being sent to those affected properties.

The section of Coronation Drive from Newburn Bridge to Warrior Drive at Seaton Carew will be closed from 7.30am-10.30am for the cycling element of the race.

For residents in properties off Warrior Drive, signed diversions will be in place.

A section of promenade from Hartlepool Marina to Newburn Bridge at Seaton Carew will also be shut from 7am to 10.30am.

The organisers would like to thank residents in advance for their co-operation and understanding while the event is being held.
