Changes to the Household Waste Recycling Centre

Published Monday, 2nd September 2024

Residents of Hartlepool are reminded that from Wednesday 4th September they will no longer need an appointment to visit the Household Waste Recycling Centre in Burn Road.

This follows a decision taken earlier this summer by Hartlepool Borough Council’s Neighbourhood Services Committee to end the booking system.

Officers have since been making the necessary arrangements to ensure the centre continues to operate as smoothly and safely as possible.

The HWRC is open only to Hartlepool residents, and visitors to the site are asked to bring photographic ID and proof of address. Periodic checks will be carried out and anyone unable to provide proof of address will be asked to leave and will not be allowed to dispose of their waste.

Visitors are also asked to stop at the site office so that staff can direct them to the appropriate disposal point and take payment for any chargeable waste.

There is a height restriction on site, and vehicles over 2m are not permitted.  Anyone visiting the site in a van (under 2m), minibus or towing a trailer will require a waste permit. Further information on how to apply is available by calling (01429) 401987. Commercial vehicles are not permitted to use the site, although it may be possible to accommodate them in the Council’s adjacent waste transfer station. Charges will apply. To find out more about this call (01429) 401987.

The site remains open Wednesday to Sunday and the opening hours of the Household Waste Recycling Centre are as follows:

Mornings

9am-12pm (Gates close at 11.50am)

Afternoons

1-6pm from 1st April-31st October (Gates close at 5.50pm)

1-4pm from 1st November-31st March (Gates close at 3.50pm)

The site will also need to be closed at around 10.30am and 2.30pm each day for approximately 15 minutes to allow for rubbish in skips to be compacted safely. These times may change during busier periods.

It is anticipated that weekends and bank holidays will be busy times for the site and residents may have to queue during busier periods. This can be avoided by making use of quieter times on the site which are generally Wednesday and Thursday.
