Councillors in Hartlepool have stated their commitment to the town’s allotments and to working closely with allotment holders to find a more sustainable future for them.

The pledge was made by Hartlepool Borough Council’s Adult and Community-Based Services Committee as it met to receive the results of an independent review it commissioned into its allotment service.

The Council manages over 1,000 allotments across 16 sites in the borough and the review will enable it to take stock of its allotments and help inform their future development.

It will review the findings in detail and will then consult on them with allotment holders over the autumn through the chairs of the town’s individual allotment associations.

Councillor Gary Allen, Chair of the Adult and Community-Based Services Committee, said: “We would like to stress that we are very aware of how important the town’s allotments are to people and we are committed to achieving a more sustainable future for them.

“We want – and need - to work closely with allotment holders to achieve that and so I hope all allotment holders will have their say in the consultation this autumn, so that together we can make improvements and put the town’s allotments on firmer and much more positive footing for the future.”
