Fairtrade Fortnight 2024 – be the change!

Residents of Hartlepool are being urged to help make a difference by choosing Fairtrade products whenever they shop.

The appeal has been issued by the Hartlepool Fairtrade Steering Group to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight 2024 which runs from 9th-22nd September.

The theme of the fortnight is #bethechange – acknowledgement that by purchasing Fairtrade products shoppers can help to ensure that farmers in developing countries receive a fair price for what they grow.

Fair prices provide an immediate lifeline for farmers and workers struggling with low incomes and disadvantaged by global trade.

Martin Green, Chair of the steering group, said: “It is now 30 years since Fairtrade products first hit shelves in the UK, but the campaign remains as relevant as ever.

“When you choose Fairtrade you contribute to a fairer, more sustainable future for food production.”

He also urged shoppers to lobby their local supermarkets to stock a wider range of Fairtrade products.

Councillor Brenda Harrison, Leader of Hartlepool Borough Council and a member of the steering group, said: “It is 19 years since the Council passed a motion to support Fairtrade and we were certified as a Fairtrade town – the first in the Tees Valley.

“We remain as committed as ever to the principles of Fairtrade and this year we want everyone to #bethechange by choosing Fairtrade products wherever possible and speaking up for fairer trade.”
