Work underway on School Safety Scheme
Published Wednesday, 4th June 2025Work has started on a new road safety scheme that will benefit schoolchildren and the wider community in a part of Hartlepool.
The scheme in Murray Street comprises a new zebra crossing with a set of speed cushions on either side to slow down vehicles.
Located at the site of an existing school crossing patrol, it will provide vital extra protection to children and parents/carers walking to and from nearby Lynnfield Primary School, whilst Murray Street itself is a busy commercial area used by lots of pedestrians.
Hartlepool Borough Council agreed to the safety improvements in response to concerns raised by local residents and businesses over the speed of traffic on Murray Street.
This followed a consultation undertaken with the local community which resulted in no objections.

The scheme has been welcomed by Councillor Karen Oliver, Chair of the Council’s Neighbourhood Services Committee and a local ward councillor, who said it would make a big difference to people trying to cross the busy road.
“Residents and businesses have campaigned for action to curb the speed of traffic using Murray Street, and I would like to commend them on their community spirit and determination to bring about change.
“This scheme is also a great example of the Council listening to the concerns of local people, taking action to address them, making our roads safer and our neighbourhoods stronger.”
The scheme is costing around £30,000 and funding is being provided from the School Safety Schemes budget within the Council’s Local Transport Plan.
