Edgelands

Edgelands both celebrates and questions our treatment of the landscape. The work of these six artists explores and documents the landscapes in Britain which are unnamed, overlooked and often forgotten about and yet where beauty does indeed exist and thrive. Beyond the narrative of the paintings, which show neglected wasteland and ruins, the works contain the personal journeys of memory and loss experienced by each artist.

These are paintings that we can all inhabit: they echo something of our ordinary day-to-day existence and examine the thinking behind our lives, our neighbourhoods and the land beyond. For some it represents snapshots of our daily journeys, by train or car, bicycle or bus or ferry across a river; journeys that criss-cross the land and our daily lives which we absorb, acknowledge or ignore.”

Artist/curator of the touring exhibition, Day Bowman, said: “I am delighted to be displaying our work within Hartlepool Art Gallery which is the perfect setting to showcase this exhibition and for people to walk around and enjoy the art. As a group of painters we appreciate the recognition Ashley Landsbury has given to this important body of painting”.

Ashley Landsbury, Cultural Officer (Arts & Exhibitions) at Hartlepool Borough Council, added: “We are thrilled to be displaying ‘Edgelands’ here in Hartlepool and truly hope people visit this unusual and captivating exhibition.

“We love displaying artwork which challenges perceptions and questions cultural ideals and so we hope it encourages people to appreciate beauty in places where they least expect to see it”.
