Uncover your family history in Hartlepool

PEOPLE in Hartlepool with an interest in tracing their family history are being encouraged to sign up for a new course at the town’s Central Library.

Starting in June, the six week course will help people learn all about family history research and how to use the library’s local history archives to put their ancestors’ lives in historical context.

Using resources such as Ancestry.com, Find My Past, census returns, parish registers, trade directories, historic maps, newspapers and photographs, participants will be shown how to build up a picture of what life was like for their family in Hartlepool across the decades.

Sandra McKay, a Hartlepool Borough Council Library Officer, said: “This course is perfect for anyone who wants to know more about their family history than just names and dates.

“We are keeping the classes very small, so there will be lots of one-to-one support from the Library staff.

“You never know where family history research can lead, so everyone will come away with a unique experience.”

The course will last for six weeks and will start at Hartlepool Central Library on Thursday 15 June. Sessions will run from 10am to 12 noon. The course cost is £40 per person.

For more information, or to book a place, call Sandra McKay at the library on (01429) 242909 or email infodesk@hartlepool.gov.uk.
