Emerging artist launches landscape exhibition at Summerhill

Artist Stuart Jones’ exhibition “Oils in the Open Landscape” captures strong and vibrant lighting effects of the outdoors in oil paint, and can be viewed within the cafe at Summerhill Visitor Centre, Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm (Fridays, 4.30pm) until Tuesday 3 October.

Stuart was offered the opportunity to display his work at the Hartlepool Borough Council-run visitor centre as part of a rota of exhibitions at the venue highlighting emerging new talent in the visual arts.

Lisa Newton, Cultural Officer at Hartlepool Borough Council, said, “We are delighted to present a range of paintings by Stuart Jones who has been working towards his solo show over the past year.

“In his work you can see an impressionistic style that comes through from painting quickly and with energy. I think visitors will be able to recognise their appeal and we’re very happy to be showcasing Stuart at the start of his artistic career."

His subject matter covers coastal scenes, rural countryside and urban environments local to the region and beyond, with several of the paintings focusing on features found at Summerhill Country Park, including the replica of the Roman Roundhouse and the climbing boulders. 

Stuart said: “I wanted to include aspects of Summerhill in my work, as it perfectly illustrates the type of natural subject that I look for and am inspired by when making a painting. 

“It aims to encourage people to enjoy the outdoors, either for physical exercise or exploring the sights around them. I hope the exhibition will be well received as I know Hartlepool is a strong supporter of the arts.”

Stuart will continue to display his artwork at various open exhibitions across the region.
