Historic Mapping Display

These maps were designed as part of the Historic Mapping Project in 2019, and finally shared on buildings in Church Square for a few months in 2021.  The aim of the project was to examine historic maps and think about the street as it is now.  We created maps of the area in order to record and interpret Church Street and Church Square and what they look like today.

Workshop sessions were delivered with pupils from Ward Jackson Primary School, youth groups and members of the public.

Participants researched historic plans and information held by the library service and then under the guidance of illustrator Sophia Pearson produced observational drawing and rubbings in the Townscape Heritage area.  Sophia incorporated the artworks into the maps displayed.

Church Street Memories Window Display

This display was featured at No 9 Church Street in 2020.  Postcards were produced as part of an oral history project, where members of the public were encouraged to write down their memories of Church Street.  We gathered these together and showcased them in this shop window.

Creative History at No 9

This project was facilitated by local Artist Amanda Smith who organised workshops led by local artists in the summer of 2021.  Activities included creating instruments and writing a song about the local area, observational drawings of buildings and learning how to sketch Church Street, lino-printing and learning about the history of Church Street.

Church Street Detectives

Delivered in August 2021 the activity was a task sheet with different questions about the buildings and architecture of Church Street.  All of the answers could be found on the street with children taking a closer look at the buildings to find the clues.

Window Wonderland

Working together in December 2021, members of the community learned about the Christmas Bazaar held on the Victorian Street and created images to decorate the windows of buildings on recreating elements of the historic advertisement.
