Garden Waste Subscription Service – sign up for 2025

Residents can now sign up to Hartlepool Borough Council’s Garden Waste Subscription Service for 2025.

Brown bins will start being emptied from Tuesday 22nd April and collections will continue until Friday 28th November.

The annual charge for one subscription is £37. Residents may also choose to take out up to three additional subscriptions, each costing £23 plus the cost of any additional bins residents require. Only households that subscribe will have their garden waste bins emptied.

Residents can ensure they get all eight scheduled collections by subscribing early. All subscriptions must be placed seven days or more before their first collection is due to ensure maximum benefit. They can sign up at www.hartlepool.gov.uk/garden-waste-collections Individual collection dates can be checked at www.hartlepool.gov.uk/findmybinday

Last year, around 12,800 residents subscribed to the service, and the Council collected 2,295 tonnes of garden waste. The waste is taken to a local recycling facility where it is turned into compost.

Councillor Karen Oliver, Chair of the Council’s Neighbourhood Services Committee, said: “To tackle emerging climate change it’s important that we all play our part in recycling our waste wherever possible.

“I’d like to thank the thousands of households which have supported the service since subscription was introduced in 2023, and I would urge people to sign up as soon as possible this year to ensure they get the maximum benefit.”

Residents who subscribe receive a unique tamper-proof sticker for their bin which confirms they have paid. The sticker must be clearly visible on a bin for it to be emptied. Stickers will be sent out in March.

The Council says that charging for garden waste collections, as most other local authorities do, is fair as the service will only be used by those households that choose to subscribe – and not all properties in Hartlepool require collections. The charge helps to reduce the cost of running the overall waste collection service which includes general and recyclable waste.
