Seaside Safety

Beach Safety

Whilst many hazards at the seaside occur when we go into the sea, there are safety measures to consider when out and about on the beach.

Sun safety

Spending even a short time in the sun can give you sunburn, heat exhaustion or heat stroke so always remember:

  • Wear a high factor sunscreen of 15 or more with UVA and UVB protection.
  • During the hottest part of the day, between 11am and 3pm, try to avoid being in direct sun.
  • You can still get sun burnt on an overcast day.
  • Avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion by drinking water throughout the day.
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and consider wearing hats/ long- sleeved t-shirt.

Children's safety

If you’re taking children to the beach, please be aware of the following:

  • Don’t let your child walk to the sea line on their own – the water may be much further out than it appears, and the tides can change quickly.
  • Consider writing your phone number on a wristband, or a piece of paper in their pocket, so you can be contacted if they get lost.
  • Arrange a meeting point with your children in case you’re separated.
  • Take a photo of your child at the start of the day to help you find them.
