- Decide on the order you wish to use for the sections. You should start with Name and Address and end with Personal and Reference section. Education and Employment can be swapped around according to the type of applicant. Place the Personal Statement underneath the block headings with Name, Address and Telephone Number.
- Use evidence of skills and abilities to bring to life dull sections.
- Place Key Skills section where it will give maximum effect.
- Use simple language and avoid technical terms.
- Don’t feel you have to give a detailed explanation of every job function – focus on key areas; leave out explanations for jobs of lesser importance, or where the job title says it all, e.g. Pub Glass Collector.
- Check that the formatting works to your advantage and decide on font style, layout etc.
- Move sections around to see what looks best.
- Keep it to two pages; if necessary do a separate reference page or just write ‘References available on request’.
- Write it, word-process it and then put it away for a day or two. Then go back and read it and decide if it works for you. Does it make sense and convey a real impression of you.
- Finally, check for the three ‘L’s and the two ‘E’s:
- Is the Layout perfect?
- Is it Logical?
- Have you expressed Enthusiasm?
- Is there Evidence for skills and experience?
