Preparing for an Interview

In order to perform to your best ability and ensure you have effectively prepared for the interview the following actions should be completed:

  • Research the job.  Make sure you understand what the job you are seeking is all about.  If you want to convince the employer you have the skills and experience required for that job, you must first know about the details of the position.  Refer to the job advertisement or job description.  What skills and abilities are they looking for and how can you give evidence that you possess them?
  • Research the organisation.  Find out some basic information (e.g. what they do, make or sell).  Friends, neighbours, relatives, company websites or local projects are a good source of information, also read any information they have sent to you about the organisation.  If you have done enough research prior to the interview, these questions should be easy to answer.  You will be in a better position to ask intelligent questions and you will impress the interviewer with your initiative and knowledge.
  • Anticipate questions.  Think about what questions you might be asked and prepare your answers.  A useful tip is to look at the job description – this should enable you to define the qualities the recruiter is looking for.  Practice your answers out loud to hear how they sound but don’t memorise them word for word or you will end up sounding too rehearsed.  It is also a good idea to prepare questions you would like to ask the employer.
  • Plan your journey.  It sounds obvious, but mistakes are made.  Make sure you know exactly where you are going and how you are getting there.  Consider a trail run.  If you are using public transport – check bus timetables.  Leave yourself sufficient time to cover unexpected transport difficulties. It is vital you arrive on time.
  • Think about what you will wear.  This will depend upon the sort of work you will be doing, but in general dress smart.  It will show the interviewer that you are taking the interview seriously and that you think it is important.  You do not have to buy a new outfit.  Aim for a clean; tidy appearance.

Gather together the documents you will need at the interview.  For example your CV, or items requested by the employer (e.g. photographs, bank details, national insurance number) and a notebook containing questions you want to ask.
