Career Planning

When considering a new career, or new venture in life it is important to try and identify a clear path. Career planning helps us grow, and having a realistic career plan in place is often an essential part of our personal growth and development. A personalised Career Plan will support you to identify your current skills, and set goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound (SMART) that will lead you towards achieving your end goal. By breaking down your long term goals into shorter, achievable goals you are more likely to recognise your success along the way, and have a higher chance of achieving your end goal.

As part of a Career Plan you should consider the following:

Goals: Short term: 1 - 2 years, Mid Term: 2 5 years, Long Term: 5 years+

Interests and Strengths: Are you creative? Do you enjoy working with numbers? Organised? Enjoy working with people? Creative?

Motivation: Why do you want to work within your chosen career? What will motivate you to continue to work towards chosen career? Money, job satisfaction, promotion, authority?

Current Competencies, Skills, Knowledge, Experience: What experience, qualifications, transferrable skills and knowledge do you have that will support you work towards your chosen career?

Development and Training: You will need to research your chosen career in order to establish the qualifications and relevant training required. As well as formal qualifications you may require previous experience. Voluntary work is a great way to gain an insight into your chosen career and gain practical experience, speak to your Adviser for more advice about voluntary opportunities available through Adult Education.

Barriers: This section allows you to explore possible threats that could prevent you from achieving your goals. Examples include, lack of time, personal commitments, fear, and financial restrictions. There are a number of factors, sometimes beyond our control that can prevent us achieving our goals, but by addressing them and planning around those barriers, success can be achieved.
